Athletics Public Address Announcer (Hiring Year Round)

Position Summary
The Athletics department is hiring multiple positions with start dates throughout the year. Hours will be variable and dependent upon athletic game schedules. This posting will remain open until April 1, 2027 and review of applicants will be ongoing.

The PA Announcer is the main voice of the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens on game night. The PA Announcer’s duties include playing music, announcing starting line­ups, all game action, public address announcements, presentations, contests, and other duties as assigned.

Position Responsibilities
Game Night PA Announcing:
    • Meets with event leads in order to review schedules and exchange information about game night happenings, additional events, national anthem performers, and starting lineups.
    • Reads prepared scripts.
    • Reviews and announces crowd control procedures before the beginning of each event.
    • Informs patrons of upcoming events at a specific venue.
    • Announces programs and player substitutions or other changes to patrons.
    • Instructs and calms crowds during emergencies.
    • Learns to pronounce the names of players, coaches, institutional personnel, officials, and other individuals involved in an event.
    • Improvises commentary on items of interest, such as the background and history of an event or the past records of participants.

 

Master of Ceremonies:
  • Serves as master of ceremonies on game nights for special events.
  • Reads prepared scripts describing halftime games, acts or tricks presented during performances.
  • Is fun and engaging to all in attendance.
Music and Atmosphere:
  • Works with game night staff to ensure proper setup/takedown of game night sound systems and PA announcer tools (microphone, music player, speakers, etc.).
  • Previews any music intended for broadcast over the public address system for appropriate language and content. All music must be approved by supervisor.
  • Is aware of the actions and mood of the crowd with the intent to keep patrons and the venue safe.
  • Is in communication with the game night lead for any improvisational needs that may occur on a game night.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One to two years of public speaking experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.
  • Public speaking
  • Ability to conduct oneself in alignment with RDP Values
  • Experience in handling conflict
  • Energetic and enthusiastic with interest in Athletics
  • Knowledge of Athletic Games is an asset
Salary or Hourly? Hourly

Salary

$22.18 per hour

Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
