Public Address Announcer ( High School )

The public address announcer at a high school event is a “Champion of Character”. He/she can influence the atmosphere of the contest by what is said and how it is said. The announcer who performs professionally promotes good sportsmanship by what he/she says and how he/she acts upon saying it.
Job Title: Public Address Announcer
Hourly Wage: $18.00/hour
Reports To: Activity Directors
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Clear, confident speaking voice with strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to read and pronounce student names accurately
- Ability to follow scripts, schedules, and school/district guidelines
- Professional demeanor when interacting with students, staff, officials, and the public
- Ability to remain calm, organized, and flexible during live events
- Basic knowledge of school athletics and/or activities preferred
- Ability to operate or learn basic audio/PA equipment
- Ability to work under pressure
Essential Functions
- Articulate all organization scripts and commercial/sponsor copy.
- Accurately pronounce all organization and competitor names.
- Announce all pertinent game/match/event information as associated with assigned sport.
- Enhance game/match/event day experience using limited inflection as directed by administration.
- Retain extensive knowledge of the rules of the assigned sports.
- Interface with administration/game operations/event presentation throughout game/match/contest/event regarding special announcements and changes.
- Interface with the officiating team throughout the event when necessary.
- Calmly enunciate any emergency announcements as provided by administration. Refrain from all commentary as might be provided by play-by-play/color broadcasters.
- Arrive prepared several hours prior to any game/match/contest/events.
- Announcements or comments shall be made during those times when there is a stoppage of the clock and the ball is not live, such as time outs, between quarters, pregame, half time and post game.
- The announcer is allowed to announce basic information that does not potentially affect the play in general, the players, the coaches, or the officials.
Other Functions
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
- Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
- Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Working Environment
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
